John E. Stephenson

John E. Stephenson, Esq. has a diverse range of work experience in the field of athletics compliance and law. John began their career as a Summer Legal Intern at McLean Law, PC, where they gained knowledge of courtroom procedure and assisted with various legal cases in Family and Criminal Law. John then worked as a Summer Legal Intern at Durham County Government, advising on county government-related legal matters and ensuring compliance with laws. Stephenson furthered their legal experience as a Summer Legal Intern at the Supreme Court of North Carolina, where they prepared legal documents and conducted research for Justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson.

Stephenson later transitioned to the field of athletics compliance, starting as an Athletics Compliance Intern at East Carolina University. John then served as an Athletics Compliance Intern at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Stephenson continued to advance in their career, holding roles such as Assistant Director of Athletics Compliance and Athletics Compliance Coordinator at Indiana University Bloomington. John also served as the Director of Athletics Compliance at Florida State University.

Currently, Stephenson holds the position of Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance at Florida Atlantic University. In this role, they oversee the operations and budget of the athletics compliance department, provides compliance education to stakeholders, and serves as a sport administrator for the Men's & Women's Tennis programs. Stephenson is also actively involved in committee work and serves on the institution's FRAAC (Financial Aid, Registrar, Admissions, Academics, and Compliance) committee.

Throughout their career, Stephenson has demonstrated a strong commitment to athletics compliance, legal research, advocacy, and administrative leadership.

John E. Stephenson, Esq. obtained their Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degrees from North Carolina Central University, specializing in Law & Business Administration, during the period of 2009-2013. Prior to that, they completed their Bachelor's Degree in Recreational Sports Management, with a minor in Business Administration, also at North Carolina Central University from 2005-2009. John received their High School Diploma from E.E. Smith High School in 2005. Additionally, John E. Stephenson, Esq. holds several certifications, including a Hospitality & Tourism Management Certificate from Florida Atlantic University (2020), an Attorney certification from The Missouri Bar (2015), an NAAC Education Certification from the National Association for Athletics Compliance (2014), and an Associate Instructor certification from the Professional Tennis Registry (2011).
