John Burnett has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. John began their career as a Forward Observer in the US Army, serving two combat tours in Iraq. After leaving the military, they worked as a Deputy Sheriff at the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office. John then transitioned into the legal field, starting as an Associate Attorney at Carlton Fields Jorden Burt. John later held various roles at Duke Energy Corporation, including Associate General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel. Most recently, they served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, and later as Vice President and General Counsel at Florida Power & Light Company.

John Burnett graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1996 with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology. John then attended the Florida State University College of Law from 1996 to 1999, where they obtained their Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in Law. In 2014, John attended the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School for a year to participate in the Senior Leadership Development Program.
