Michael Carter has a long and varied work experience. Michael began their career in 2004 as an Information Technology Specialist for the General Services Administration, where they conducted FISMA reviews and vulnerability scanning. In 2006, they moved to Nortel Government Solutions as an Information Security Analyst, where they conducted C&A services for multiple government agencies. In 2007, they joined Veris Group, LLC as Vice President - Governance, Risk, and Compliance, where they developed and managed the GRC security practice. In 2016, they became Vice President at Coalfire, responsible for overseeing all aspects of Coalfire's 3PAO assessment program. In 2020, they took on the role of Compliance Specialist, supporting clients through their various compliance efforts. Most recently, in 2021, they became the Managing Partner/Co-founder at Fortreum.

Michael Carter obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from James Madison University in 2004, majoring in Computer Information Systems and Operations Management. Michael also holds certifications from CompTIA, (ISC)2, Amazon Web Services, Cloud Security Alliance, NSA, and Project Management Institute. Michael obtained the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) certification in August 2022.
