Donald Tarbell has a diverse work experience in law enforcement. Donald began their career in 2005 as a State Trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. In 2007, they joined SLED as a Special Agent before moving on to the Bishopville Police Department in 2010, where they served as the Interim Chief of Police. In 2012, they joined Francis Marion University as the Captain/Deputy Chief before being promoted to the position of Chief of Police in 2015. Additionally, Tarbell also served in the Marine Corps Recruiting from 1994 to 2016, reaching the rank of Major.

Donald Tarbell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies from the University of South Carolina from 1997 to 2000. Later, they pursued a Master of Arts degree in Management at National University from 2003 to 2005.
