Karsten Krug

Associate Director, Head of Bioinformatics at Frontier Medicines

Karsten Krug has had an extensive work experience in the field of bioinformatics and computational science. Karsten is currently employed as the Associate Director and Head of Bioinformatics at Frontier Medicines since December 2022. Prior to this, they worked as a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at the same company from November 2021 to December 2022.

Before joining Frontier Medicines, Krug worked at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard for several years. Karsten started as a Research Assistant at Leipzig University in 2008. Karsten then moved on to work as a PhD student at the Proteome Center Tuebingen from January 2009 to July 2013, where their research focused on high accuracy mass spectrometry in the refinement of genome annotation.

After completing their PhD, Krug continued to work at the Proteome Center Tuebingen as a Staff Scientist Bioinformatics from August 2008 to September 2015. During this time, they also served as a Staff Scientist/Postdoc from August 2013 to September 2015, where their responsibilities included assembling and assessing individualized protein databases derived from RNA-seq data and conducting comparative proteogenomics of human cancer cell lines. Karsten also provided bioinformatics support for research and core facility projects and assisted in maintaining a heterogeneous IT environment.

From January 2017 to June 2020, Krug held the position of Computational Scientist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Karsten then took on the role of Senior Computational Scientist from July 2020 to November 2021, where they were an integral member of the Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC) of the NCI. Their responsibilities included coordinating analysis efforts across multiple research institutions within the CPTAC network.

Overall, Krug has demonstrated expertise in bioinformatics, computational science, and proteomics throughout their career.

Karsten Krug completed their education in a chronological manner. Karsten began their studies at Leipzig University from 2001 to 2007, where they obtained a Diplom degree in Bioinformatics. Following this, they pursued further education at the University of Tübingen from 2009 to 2013. Here, they completed a Dr. rer. nat degree in Molecular Biology.
