Wendi Shafran

Principal & Director of Affordable Housing at FXCollaborative

Like a conductor who harnesses musicians’ talents and strengths to build a harmonious composition, Wendi coordinates a myriad of responsibilities amid her collaborations with colleagues, clients, and consultants. With twenty years of expertise in multi-family residential, mixed-use, and hotel design, she resolves complex technical and programmatic issues while maintaining the integrity of each project, informing the design process through the development of innovative details and solutions. From zoning analysis to code compliance, schematic design development to design detailing—every carefully considered detail ensures a project's success.

Thinking three-dimensionally has always come naturally to Wendi but a high school field trip to PS1 in Queens gave her a first glimpse of architecture's potential. As she stood beneath James Turrell's Meeting, gazing through it at the sky, she connected to an architectural experience blurring boundaries and playing with scale; this connection led to her master's degree in architecture at Columbia University.

Wendi responds to and addresses specific community needs for housing and amenities while highlighting the historic character of the surrounding neighborhoods. She works fluently toward the creation of inspirational yet socially conscious spaces that seek to define new experiences, focusing primarily on function, context, and aesthetics. She believes that built environments have a dual environmental and community impact that, when designed well, can effect social change.
