Carlos Biaou

Manager Solar Cell & Metrology at GAF Energy

Carlos Biaou has a diverse range of work experience in the field of solar energy research and development. Carlos currently serves as an R&D PV Characterization Engineer at GAF Energy, a position they have held since November 2020. Prior to this, Carlos worked at SunPower Corporation as an R&D Intern, where they developed and optimized new metrology tools for assessing the cosmetic appearance of solar cells. Carlos also deployed these tools at both the R&D and factory level.

Carlos also gained research experience as a Research Intern at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2014, where they simulated ion implantation profiles for the targets of the Genesis Mission. At the University of Maryland, Carlos worked as an Undergraduate Research Fellow and built a system to concentrate light for silicon solar cells using a glass block with Lambertian surfaces.

In 2012, Carlos was a Research Intern at the University of Pennsylvania, where they built a programmable time division multiple polarization graphic processing system. Carlos controlled the rotation of a servomotor and processed polarization-sensitive frames using the OpenCV library. Carlos also worked as a Math and Science Tutor at Prince George's Community College and as a Research Intern at Howard University.

In 2011, Carlos developed Zinc Oxide-based transistors through inkjet printing at the University of Michigan. Carlos worked in a cleanroom facility and presented their research at the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network Convocation.

Overall, Carlos Biaou has a strong background in solar energy research and development, with experience in characterization, simulation, system design, and material development.

Carlos Biaou's education history starts with their baccalauréat in Mathématiques et Sciences Physiques, which they obtained from Lycée International de Calavi in 2009. Following this, they attended Prince George's Community College from 2009 to 2012, where they earned an Associate of Science (AS) in Electrical Engineering. Carlos then transferred to the University of Maryland - A. James Clark School of Engineering, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering from 2012 to 2014.

Carlos subsequently joined the University of California, Berkeley in 2014, where they pursued higher education in Electrical Engineering. Carlos obtained a Master of Science (MS) degree in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2018. Continuing their studies at UC Berkeley, Carlos completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Science & Technology in 2020. Carlos also holds additional certifications, including a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley obtained in December 2020, and a Cooke Scholar certification from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation obtained in September 2017.
