Kortney’s practice focuses on commercial bankruptcy and business law. This includes contracts, transactions, litigation, and settlement resolution. She is also a skilled mediator and settlement advocate.
Kortney has vast business experience spanning over 20 years, having been both a long-time business owner and involved in franchised restaurants. She was previously an owner of companies involved in real estate interests and the manufacturing of neutraceuticals, and an owner of multiple franchised restaurants. Her experience gives Kortney valuable operations knowledge and insight and understanding of businesses, restaurants, and corporate issues, including vendor, creditor, and employee relations.
She completed a highly sought-after federal clerkship and served as Chief Judge Daniel P. Collins’ judicial law clerk at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Arizona, in Phoenix.
Kortney earned her J.D. from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, where she was a Willard H. Pedrick Scholar and graduated in the top tier of her class. She also earned multiple CALI Awards, awarded to the top student in class, for: Contracts, Trusts and Estates, Criminal Procedure, and Sports Law.
While in law school, she served a judicial externship for Hon. Eddward P. Ballinger, Jr., at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona. She also attained her Mediation Certificate and completed ASU’s Lodestar Mediation Clinic program, where she was voted best mediator. She has mediation experience in Justice Court, Bankruptcy Court, the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), and private mediations.
She earned her B.A. in International Affairs from the University of Colorado at Denver, with an emphasis on Political Science, French, and Economics. She was a Dean’s List Scholar and completed a study abroad in northern France.
Kortney is a member of the State Bar of Arizona’s sections on Bankruptcy, Employment and Labor Law, and Business Law. She has also participated in the Community Legal Services’ Volunteer Lawyers Program and represented low-income litigants pro bono.
