Group Leader - Prader-willi Syndrome And Genetic Forms Of Diabetes Research Group at Garvan Institute of Medical Research

Alexander Viardot has a diverse work experience in the field of medical research and healthcare. Alexander currently holds the position of Associate Professor (Conjoint) at the University of New South Wales, a role they have been in since February 2015. Prior to this, they worked at St Vincent's Health Network Sydney, where they served as the Deputy Director (joint) of the Diabetes Service and also as a Senior Staff Specialist in the Department of Endocrinology from January 2012 onwards. Viardot was also associated with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, where they were the Group Leader for the Prader-Willi Syndrome and Genetic Forms of Diabetes Research Group from December 2013. Alexander was also an NHMRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the institute from January 2012 to December 2013. Before joining Garvan Institute, Viardot worked at Imperial College London as an NHMRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow & Visiting Consultant from January 2010 to December 2011. Alexander started their research career at the Garvan Institute as a Postdoctoral Research Officer from November 2008 to December 2009 and later as a Research Fellow from April 2004 to October 2008. Additionally, Viardot has worked as a Consultant Endocrinologist (VMO) at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney from January 2008 to December 2009. Alexander began their medical career as an MD at the University Hospital Basel, a position they held from April 1998 to March 2004.

Alexander Viardot's education history begins in 1991 when they attended the University of Basel to pursue a degree in Medicine. Alexander completed their MD in 1997. Moving forward, they enrolled at the same university for specialist training in Internal Medicine, Diabetes & Endocrinology and obtained a Specialist Physician FMH degree between 1998 and 2005. Following this, they pursued a PhD at UNSW (University of New South Wales) from 2006 to 2008, focusing on the field of Obesity, Diabetes, and Immunology. In 2010 and 2011, Viardot engaged in a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Imperial College London, specializing in Medicine. Later on, they returned to UNSW to further their education and completed a Master of Health Management and Leadership degree from 2019 to 2021. Additionally, during the same period, Viardot simultaneously pursued a Master of Public Health degree at UNSW.
