A/Prof. David Gallego Ortega has an extensive work experience in the field of medical research and academia. A/Prof. David is currently serving as the Deputy Head of School (Research) and Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney since February 2021. Prior to this, they worked at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, where they held the positions of Visiting Scientist, Elaine Henry NBCF Fellow, and Group Leader as part of the Cancer Institute New South Wales Career Development Fellow program. A/Prof. David was associated with the institute from January 2017 to February 2021.
Before joining the Garvan Institute, A/Prof. Ortega worked at UNSW, where they held various roles including Senior Visiting Fellow, Conjoint Senior Lecturer, and Conjoint Lecturer. A/Prof. David started their tenure at UNSW in 2012 and is still affiliated with the university.
Their career in medical research began at the Garvan Institute in 2009, where they served as a National Breast Cancer Foundation & Cure Cancer Australia Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow, Senior Research Officer, and Research Officer until 2015.
A/Prof. Ortega started their professional journey as a Postdoctoral Researcher at TCD Pharma in 2008. Prior to that, they were a PhD student at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research from 2003 to 2008. A/Prof. David began their research career at the Hospital Fundación Jiménez Díaz in 1999, where they worked on research projects.
A/Prof. David Gallego Ortega completed their Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Genetics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid from 1996 to 2001. Subsequently, they pursued a PhD degree in Biochemistry at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, which they obtained from 2003 to 2008.
