Steve Hellen

Steve Hellen is currently the Head of Information Management at the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), a role they assumed in January 2021. In this position, they lead a team of experts to deliver capacity strengthening and technical development programs for the Mine Action sector.

Prior to joining GICHD, Steve held the role of Senior Director of Information Technology - Field Systems/ICT4D at Catholic Relief Services from May 2012 to January 2021. In this role, they provided strategic direction for the adoption of field technologies and managed major system implementations globally.

From 2002 to 2012, Steve worked at Johns Hopkins University, where they served in various roles within the central IT organization. Steve held the position of Director of Academic Technology from 2008 to 2012, overseeing the university's portfolio of academic technologies and managing parts of the student information system. Steve also worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences from August 2011 to December 2011.

Additionally, Steve served as Affiliate Faculty at Loyola University Maryland from September 2010 to April 2012.

Steve's career began at Accenture in 1998, where they worked as a Consultant. Steve contributed to the technical design, development, and delivery of enterprise applications and provided expertise in constructing technical architectures for clients in various industries.

Steve Hellen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science from Loyola University Maryland, which they completed from 1994 to 1998. Steve then pursued a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science and Policy at The Johns Hopkins University from 2002 to 2005. Following that, from 2006 to 2008, they obtained a Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems from Penn State University. In terms of certifications, Steve obtained a Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute in December 2008, and a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer certification from Microsoft in 2001.
