Matt Herbert

Matt Herbert, Ph.D., is a prominent expert in the field of organized crime, political economy, and security sector reform, currently serving as the Head of Research for North Africa and the Sahel at the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime since January 2020. Herbert has extensive experience managing teams and overseeing research projects focused on organized crime, migration, and conflict sensitivity across North Africa and the Sahel. Previous roles include Senior Expert and Senior Analyst at the North Africa and Sahel Observatory and a range of consultancy positions where Herbert led field research and analysis on border security and illicit markets. With a Ph.D. in International Relations from The Fletcher School at Tufts University, Herbert's academic background complements a distinguished career in various organizations, including the United States Institute of Peace and the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security.
