Justin Hugues-Nuger is a seasoned computational linguist with extensive experience in developing natural language understanding (NLU) and automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. Currently leading the development of a bespoke NLU pipeline at Grammarly, Justin is focused on enhancing multi-turn conversational interactions with the GrammarlyGO assistant. Prior to this role, Justin contributed to Amazon Music as a Senior Language Engineer, where the optimization of ASR and NLU pipelines for conversational music experiences was paramount. Justin's career includes significant positions at Nuance Communications, where in various capacities as Principal and Senior Research Scientist, a range of language models were developed for multiple languages and applications in consumer electronics. Earlier roles included optimizing speech recognition systems at Voxify and contributing to NASA’s Regulus project during an internship. Justin holds a BA in Linguistics from McGill University and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, complemented by postdoctoral research and additional coursework in computer science and creative writing.
