Ryan'story

UCSD's founding was driven by local civic leaders who were concerned about the growing population of post-World War II veterans in San Diego. The university was established in 1960 near the pre-existing Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and was influenced by the UC Berkeley model, although it was intended to be a general campus rather than a research institute.

The university was initially intended to be a graduate and research institution, but in the 1970s it began to establish undergraduate programs as well. In the 1980s, UCSD added a number of professional schools, including the School of Medicine, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, and the Rady School of Management.

In the 1990s, the university began to expand its physical campus, adding a number of new buildings and facilities. In 2000, UCSD opened the San Diego Supercomputer Center, which is now one of the largest and most powerful computer centers in the world.
