Su Matthews has a diverse work experience spanning across various companies and roles. They started their career in 2005 as a Student Services Officer at Salford City College, where they set up a Student Services Department and Learning Resource Centre. They then moved on to work as a Skills Coach at Standguide Ltd, working with clients from different backgrounds and helping transform their lives. In 2008, Su joined Manchester Solutions as a Training and Communications Manager, taking on various responsibilities such as launching the National Careers Service and training staff on the Mid Life Career Review project. They continued working at Manchester Solutions as a Partnership Coordinator and later as a Partnership Trainer, where they focused on promoting the Advancement Network and coordinating training for Front Line Workers. In 2014, Su joined The Skills Company as a Campaign Manager, before moving on to the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service in 2015. At the Fire Service, they worked as a People Systems and Learning Associate Partner, handling the quality assurance, standardization, and delivery of training courses. Currently, Su is working at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority as the Head of Culture and Inclusion.

Su Matthews has a diverse education history. In 1998, they attended the University of Lincoln, where they obtained a HND in Caring Services (Social Care). Su then continued their education at Leeds Beckett University from 2000 to 2002, where they earned a BSc in Social Policy and Administration. Following this, in 2006, Su completed an NVQ Level 3 Advice and Guidance program at MANCAT. Su furthered their expertise in the field by pursuing an NVQ Level 4 Advice and Guidance qualification at In Train in 2007-2008. In 2009, Su enrolled in The University of Bolton and successfully completed the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) course. Su later pursued a Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Workplace at In Train from 2011 to 2012. Finally, Su Matthews concluded their education journey at The University of Bolton in 2011-2013, obtaining a Professional Graduate Diploma of Education - DTLLS.
