Debarun Kar

Debarun Kar has a diverse work experience, with their most recent position being the Director of Engineering for Data Intelligence and Machine Learning at company H1, where they started in February 2023. Prior to this, they worked as a Senior Staff Software Engineer in the same field at H1 from April 2022 to January 2023.

Before joining H1, Debarun held various roles at Goldman Sachs, starting as a Big Data/ML Engineer in the Surveillance Analytics Strats team from July 2017 to December 2018. Debarun later became the Big Data/ML Lead in the same team from January 2019 to April 2022. As an Engineering Manager (Vice President) at Goldman Sachs, their work involved Named Entity Recognition & Resolution, Text Summarization, Sentiment Modeling for Client & Surveillance Analytics, Topic Modeling, and Information Propagation Modeling on Large Scale Heterogeneous Entity Graphs for MNPI Leakage & Insider Threat Detection.

Debarun's earlier experience includes working as a Graduate Research Assistant at USC Viterbi School of Engineering from July 2013 to June 2017, where they focused on AI for Social Good, Game Theory, and Machine Learning & Deep Learning for Security Applications. Debarun also served as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras from July 2012 to June 2013, and as a Project Associate at Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research Cell IIT Madras from July 2010 to June 2012. Their professional journey began as a Project Assistant at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata from September 2008 to March 2009.

Debarun Kar began their education at South Point High School, where they completed their secondary education from 1990 to 2005. After graduating from high school, they attended Netaji Subhash Engineering College from 2005 to 2009, earning a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree in Computer Science and Engineering. They then pursued further studies and obtained a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, from 2010 to 2013. Lastly, Debarun Kar completed their education at the University of Southern California, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Computer Science from 2013 to 2017.
