Carol Fein Ross

Carol Fein Ross is Executive Vice President, Business Affairs and General Counsel, Hachette Book Group, Inc. Carol oversees all legal work for the group, its divisions and imprints (including business, marketing and trade, claims and litigation, transactions, employment, and intellectual property matters), and contractual arrangements with authors, creators, illustrators and distribution partners.

Carol joined the company in 1983, working in both the Time Warner corporate and Time Inc. legal departments before joining Book Group management in 1995. Carol has chaired the Lawyer’s Committee of the Association of American Publishers (AAP) for over 10 years, and is an Adjunct Professor at City University of New York. She has been a member of the Copyright Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Entertainment and Sports Law Committee of the New York State Bar Association, the U.S. Copyright Society, and the American Bar Association. Carol has been involved in strategic decision-making and corporate transactions of the company.

Carol graduated from Cornell University and Brooklyn Law School, then worked for a federal judge in Manhattan and the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, before entering the corporate world. Along with colleagues, she won a Time Inc. Presidents Award in 1998 for her work on a comprehensive agreement between Time Warner and Microsoft’s book division. She has also authored an article on Fair Use and Copyright for a publication by the AAP entitled “Book Publishing and the First Amendment.”
