Paul Takala has a diverse work experience. Paul started their career at St. George's Secondary School in The Gambia, West Africa as a Math and English Teacher from 1989 to 1991. Paul then worked at the New York Public Library as a Web Coordinator, Info Systems, Reference Librarian from 1994 to 1999. Since 2001, Paul has been with the Hamilton Public Library, where they served in various information technology leadership positions before becoming the Chief Librarian/CEO in June 2012.

Paul Takala earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto - University of St. Michael's College between 1984 and 1988. Paul later pursued further education at the University of Toronto, obtaining a Master of Library Science degree in the field of Library & Information Science from 1992 to 1994. Prior to their university studies, Paul attended JA Turner, although the specific years and field of study are not provided.
