Dr. Rohan Cumberbatch-Smith has a diverse and extensive work history. Dr. Rohan started their career in the US Army as an Infantry Soldier from 1987 to 1993. Following this, they worked as a Teaching Assistant at The Summit School from 1995 to 1998. Dr. Rohan then transitioned to the NYC Department of Education, where they worked as a Teacher from 1998 to 2001. Subsequently, Dr. Cumberbatch-Smith moved to Norfolk Public Schools, serving in various roles such as Classroom Teacher, Assistant Principal, and Elementary Principal from 2001 to 2017. Currently, they hold the position of Elementary School Principal at Hampton City Schools, a role they have held since 2021.

Dr. Rohan Cumberbatch-Smith completed an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies from Queensborough Community College of The City University of New York (CUNY) in 1996. Dr. Rohan then earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Elementary Education and Teaching from The City College of New York in 1998. Continuing their education, they obtained a Master of Science (MS) in Special Education and Teaching from Brooklyn College in 2000. Dr. Cumberbatch-Smith furthered their studies at Virginia Tech, completing an Educational Specialist Ed.S degree in Educational Leadership and Administration, General in 2005, followed by a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in the same field in 2016.
