Senior Scientist, Innovation

Cambridge, United States

Job description

Harbinger Health is pioneering the detection of early cancer and enabling foundationally new approaches to cancer screening, diagnosis, and management. Incubated within Flagship Pioneering for three years before launching in 2021, Harbinger combines advances in artificial intelligence with proprietary insights into the biology of early cancer cell formation to identify cancer before it is visible or symptomatic with the aim of developing low-cost, multi-cancer blood tests.

At Harbinger, we intend to lead in shaping this future – creating a proactive paradigm so that people can live cancer-free for longer, adding years to life and life to years. We envision a future where, instead of keeping cancer from spreading, it could be kept from forming, making a cancer diagnosis a routine health problem to be addressed rather than a life-altering event to be feared with profound implications for people, healthcare systems and societies.

Our answer starts with proprietary solutions we are developing with our platform technology.  By making cancer screening accessible on a global scale, Harbinger Health has the potential to fundamentally change cancer care, for everyone.

Our lifesaving work is grounded by our principles of rigor and transparency, constructive engagement, inclusiveness, accountability and quality, and a strong commitment to our customers, patients, and each other.  These values drive our decisions and actions. We are a highly dynamic, entrepreneurial, and innovation-driven organization seeking collaborative, passionate, and dedicated people to join our team.

Position Summary

As a Senior Scientist in the Innovation team at Harbinger Health, you will help to develop novel technologies that enhance our product portfolio and push the boundaries of diagnostic technology. With a role central to the evaluation of alternative target enrichment platforms, including NGS-based and qPCR-based systems, you will also drive assay optimization and perform clinical validations. The position will require a highly organized and analytically-driven individual and a comprehensive understanding of the vital impact that assay development and innovation have on the diagnostic space. Expertise in developing NGS assays and familiarity with various targeted enrichment techniques, along with proficiency in diverse analytical platforms like ddPCR for rare event detection, is essential. In this role you will gain broad exposure to the clinical diagnostic field, encompassing nucleic acid preparation to data analysis and bioassay development.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, plan, and conduct complex experimental studies, documenting the results meticulously in the electronic laboratory notebook (ELN).
  • Analyze data thoroughly, author detailed reports, and present findings at company meetings.
  • Use analytical skills to troubleshoot, define critical process parameters, and perform assay optimization to improve results quality while reducing cost and complexity.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Biological Sciences, Biomolecular Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field, with 5-8+ years of relevant experience in a commercial diagnostics and assay development laboratory.
  • Deep understanding of genetics and molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid purification, quantification, and various forms of PCR.
  • Experience in NGS, particularly library preparation and enrichment strategies.
  • Skilled at multitasking with the flexibility to adapt to changing workflows and priorities to achieve objectives on schedule.
  • Driven by scientific curiosity to improve and refine analytical procedures, aligning with the standards of clinical diagnostic technologies.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication capabilities.
  • Proficient in data analysis software (e.g., Prism or JMP) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biological Sciences, Biomolecular Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field with 5+ year’s experience in commercial diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with additional sequencing methods, such as long-read DNA sequencing, and CRISPR-Cas techniques.
