Harlem Grown’s mission is to inspire youth to live healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition. 

Harlem Grown operates 13 urban agricultural sites featuring 5 soil-based urban farms, 4 school gardens, 3 hydroponic greenhouses, and a mushroom chamber.  All of our sites are located between 122 and 152 Streets in Central Harlem, Manhattan. 

Since 2021, our programming has served over 10,000 youth in Harlem, we've produced and distributed over 100,000 servings of food, and diverted over 50,000 pounds of food scraps into local compost operations. 

Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability through the lens of racial justice, food justice, social justice, and equity. Our youth focused programs include intensive school partnerships, educational farm tours, a summer camp, a Saturday enrichment program, monthly community events, an afterschool program, and our Mobile Teaching Kitchen. Our community development programs open to all ages include wellness workshops, special events, food scrap collection for composting, and fresh produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.

Job Overview 

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to fill the position of Farm Education Manager. The  successful candidate will be responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing various activities within  our Riverton after-school site, Educational Farm Tours, In-School Programming and Summer Camp. The Farm  Education Manager will work closely with the Program Education Manager to oversee after-school and in school learning for students centered around building a STEAM and urban farm-based programming for  students K -12th grade. The Farm Education Manager will be responsible for the supervision of the Riverton  program site, student recruitment, staff training, parent/caregiver communication, part-time educator  management, including hiring, and curriculum development. Our after school and summer camp program will  have a robust farming curriculum centered around our mission of nutrition, urban farming, sustainability, and  wellness. We will also provide academic support through daily homework help, as well as movement time for  students. Our Education Farm tours are designed for small groups of students to interact and learn about  urban farming. The ideal candidate should possess excellent knowledge of urban farming techniques,  curriculum development, communication and leadership skills, as well as a passion for creating a positive and  enriching environment for children. 

Responsibilities

Program Planning and Implementation

  • Develop and implement a well-rounded after-school program curriculum that aligns with  educational standards and caters to the diverse needs and interests of participating students. • Coordinate and schedule various activities, including homework assistance, arts and crafts,  farm education, and other enrichment programs
  • Lead the development and implementation of fun Summer Camp that provides youth with a safe  and engaging environment
  • Develop, implement, and lead an engaging calendar of activities for Farm Education Programming happening on the 127th Street and 134th Street Farms

Supervision and Staff Management

  • Support with the hiring and training of all part-time and full-time staff members Supervise program staff and volunteers and lead staff professional development, evaluation and  performance management.  
  • Ensure that all staff members adhere to program policies and maintain a safe and supportive  environment for participants.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Maintain open and regular communication with families, and school personnel to address  concerns, share program updates, and gather feedback 
  • Collaborate with teachers, school administrators, and community partners to enhance the  overall educational experience for participating students
  • Collaborate with Harlem Grown team members to meet program goals and key results 

Administrative Tasks

  • Keep accurate records of attendance, program activities, and participant progress
  • Prepare and submit reports as required by program funders and stakeholders
  • Manage program budgets and resources efficiently
  • Work as a team member to support Harlem Grown initiatives and programs  
  • Serve as a role model for youth and reinforce Harlem Grown’s values of honesty, respect, and  responsibility.
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required 
  • Experience in kitchens, environmental education, urban farming, and/or sustainability 
  • 2-4 years of elementary age teaching experience, including extensive experience writing curricula 
  • 1-3 years program management experience including experience supervising part-time staff 
  • Very strong organizational, planning, and leadership skills 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team  
  • Master’s degree in Education or related field preferred
  • Program design and program expansion experience preferred
  • Spanish language fluency preferred
Compensation Range
$65,000$75,000 USD
