Job description

Summary/Objective: Promotes the company mission statement from within as an entry level position in the field applying construction technology to enhance project profitability and schedule goals.

Essential Functions: 

Initial Site Coordination: 

  • Aid project team/surveyor in locating site control according to company specifications to maximize usefulness &longevity of control points throughout project.

  • Work with virtual building manager to establish layout model, acquire survey coordinates, and validate site control with robotic total station.

  • Perform level loops and/or traverse loops to verify control elevations and coordinates.

  • Confirm existing grades with UAV mapping and ground control points.

  • Provide Surveying Equipment guidance/training to field staff as needed for day-to-day layout operations including standard operating procedures, troubleshooting, and proper care & maintenance.

Ongoing Site Coordination:

  • Review, verify, and help identify resolutions to project coordination issues related to grade and/or layout on all projects sites as needed during construction.

  • Site/Building Layout on all project sites as needed during construction.

  • Create and publish layout points from contract documents in coordination with the Virtual Building Coordinator (when applicable) for project teams.

  • Site documentation with UAV and/or total station as-builts for project milestones.

  • Assist project teams with transferring site control to building control with robotic total station.

  • Draft As-Built deliverables

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Periodically inspect virtual building field equipment including drones, total stations, GNSS rovers, scanners, etc. on job sites.

Trade Coordination:

  • Build up trade partners knowledge of BIM technologies and seek to expand their capabilities.

  • Perform quality control checks with robotic total station and/or drone overlays and work with team to address issues.

Competencies:

  • Experience in surveying, layout, robotic total stations strongly preferred.

  • Higher math and reasoning ability.

  • Knowledge in Autodesk, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and or Revit.

  • Knowledge of basic construction processes and procedures.

  • Possess strong problem-solving abilities.

  • Develop and maintain positive customer/Client satisfaction.

  • Improve personal professional growth and education.

  • Demonstrate positive team attitude and interpersonal effectiveness.

Supervisory Responsibilities: BIM Intern/Co-op

Work Environment: The Construction Surveyor works in the field, working at a desk, either sitting or standing, or a combination of the two, depending on preference.

Physical Demands:

  • Required to work in a variety of conditions relative to the construction jobsite environments and must be able to perform the physical requirements of the job, as assigned.

  • Weather and climate conditions will vary throughout the progress of a project and the superintendent must be able to inspect all ongoing construction activities over the duration of the assigned project.

  • This role requires walking over varied terrain, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting. Lifting requirements vary from minimal loads to heavy; but help is always available with heavier loads.

  • Inspection for quality, consistency and completeness of work frequently requires climbing ladders, stairs, and scaffolding.

  • Regular driving to multiple projects sites will be necessary. Must be able to manage sitting and driving for extended periods.

  • Driving a company-owned vehicle is required to perform duties. A valid state-issued license, satisfactory motor vehicle record, safe driving behavior, and adherence to our Driving and Truck Policy are required.

Travel Required: Travel requirements are based on project need. Daily travel to and from various project sites throughout Harper’s service area is a primary job assignment. There may be a business need for overnight stays when working on a project some distance from your assigned office or your home.

Education and Experience:

  • A degree in Engineering, Surveying, or equivalent surveying experience.
  • Minimum 1 Surveying or project engineering experience– Intern BIM Coordinator, Entry Level Field Engineer, Entry Level Project Engineer, or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and understand plans and specifications Drafting and computer skills desirable.
  • Demonstrate experience in required software. (Navisworks, Revit, AutoCAD, etc.)
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal English language communication skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment, problem‐solving ability, self-starting, and ability to prioritize based on relevant factors.
  • Experience with self‐performed scopes of work a plus.
  • Civil Engineering a plus.
  • Ability to travel frequently to job sites required.
