Gerald Lyons has worked in various roles in education and mental health since 1981. Gerald began their career as a Mental Health Associate at Clara Maass Medical Center, where they worked as a counselor in a 18 bed voluntary psychiatric inpatient unit, acted as a liaison between the Emergency Room and psychiatric unit, and ran group therapy and worked individually with clients. In 1987, they began working for Hudson County Schools of Technology (HCST) as a Supervisor of Instruction, Director of Food Services, and Coordinator of the HCST Mentoring Program. Gerald completed McREL evaluations for instructors with HCST. Gerald also began teaching at County Prep High School, where they taught cooking for 15 years, social studies for seven years, and served as supervisor of the media center from July 2009 until June 2015. Gerald also served as a class advisor for 23 years, lead teacher, mentor to new teachers, assistant director of summer and extended year programs, moderator of several clubs, and coach for two County Prep teams. In 2008, they began working as an Adjunct ESL Professor and Teacher at Hudson County Community College. In 2017, they became the Principal of KAS Prep, a non-traditional high school for students who were not successful completing high school at their sending school, where they provide vocational and academic classes and works on finding students internships and placing them in jobs.
Gerald Lyons received their AAS in Culinary Arts from Hudson County Community College in 1986. Gerald then earned their Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts from Thomas Edison State University in 2001. Between 1988 and 2005, Gerald attended New Jersey City University, earning their Master's degree in Educational Technology and certifications in Culinary Arts, Social Studies, Supervision of Instruction, WICC, and Media.
