Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora leads the day-to-day running of the health system. Functions are delivered at local, district, regional and national levels. These include: 

- hospital and specialist services
- the National Public Health Service
- clinical governance
- primary and community care.

We also work to improve services and health outcomes. We do this in partnership with Te Aka Whai Ora - Māori Health Authority.  

We have united the former 20 District Health Boards, shared services agencies and Te Hiringa Hauora (Health Promotion Agency).

The Clinical Services and Patient Safety team at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora focuses on ensuring high-quality and safe patient care across the health system. This team oversees clinical governance, manages procurement and supply chains, develops services for various health needs—including mental health, cancer, and outpatient care—and promotes patient safety and quality assurance. Collaborating closely with other health services, they work to enhance health outcomes and support the continuous improvement of clinical practices across the region.
