Josephine Oguta

Board Director at Heifer International

In the past 12 years, Josephine Oguta has been instrumental in setting up institutional governance systems and structures for an array of national and international organizations.

She has served as regional governance advisor for World Vision International – Africa Regions, where she led and promoted effective board governance practices.

Prior to that position, Oguta headed affiliate development for ActionAid International, leading the development of their global federal governance structure.

Oguta is also a member of the task force that drafted the Corporate Governance Code and Principles of Bangladesh and the chief drafts person of the Bangladesh NGO Code of Governance.

Oguta has also worked with various international and national organizations such as AMREF Health Africa International; the Nelson Mandela Foundation; ECOTA Fair Trade Forum, a national network of fair-trade organizations in Bangladesh; Proshika, a Bangladesh NGO aimed at creating group self-development process in rural poor; Southern African Network of AIDS Service Organizations; Marie Stopes International; and the British Nepal Medical Trust.

As co-founder of Boards’ Consult, Oguta has worked in the development and training of more than 100 boards of directors of nonprofit organizations and financial institutions in Africa, Europe, Asia, and America.

Oguta serves as a Strategic Partner of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute, a Member of Commonwealth for British Education Trust (CFBT) and also serves on the boards of various private corporations.

Oguta has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, History and Economics. She holds a Professional Chartered Company Secretary (ICSA UK), a certificate in Leading and Managing Nonprofit Organizations from Harvard University and a post graduate law degree.
