Alf Wachsmann

Head Of Digit Infrastructure & Scientific Computing at Helmholtz Munich

Alf Wachsmann has over 20 years of experience in scientific computing and infrastructure. Alf is currently the Head of DigIT Infrastructure & Scientific Computing at Helmholtz Zentrum München since July 2019. Prior to this, they worked at Max Delbrück Center as the Head of Scientific Computing Department from August 2017 to June 2019 and as the CIO from August 2012 to August 2017. Before that, they held the position of Acting CIO & Scientific Computing Section Leader at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology from March 2011 to August 2012. Alf began their career at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 1999, where they worked as a High Performance Computing Expert from September 1999 to September 2008. During their time at Stanford, they also served as the Head of Scientific Computing Research and Development and was responsible for the architecture and installation of a multi-petabyte storage system and compute facility. Prior to Stanford, Alf worked at Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) as a System Software Programmer, where they introduced AFS and Kerberos systems and administered the batch system.

Alf Wachsmann earned their Ph.D. in Computer Science from Paderborn University between 1990 and 1996. Alf also obtained additional certifications including the ITIL4 Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management from AXELOS Global Best Practice in 2022, the Professional Scrum Master I from Scrum.org in 2020, and the IT Information Library Foundations Certification (ITIL) from AXELOS Global Best Practice in 2014.
