Textile Conservator And Head Of Lab at HENRY FRANCIS DU PONT WINTERTHUR MUSEUM INC

Kate Sahmel has extensive experience in textile conservation. Kate began their career in 2007 as a Mellon Fellow in Costume and Textile Conservation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2010, they established their own company, Kate Sahmel, Textile Conservation, where they worked as a Textile Conservator. In 2014, they joined Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library as a Conservator of Textiles, providing support for exhibitions, loans, and the care of collections. Kate is currently the Textile Conservator and Head of Lab at Winterthur Museum. Kate Sahmel is also an Affiliated Assistant Professor for the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation (WUDPAC).

Kate Sahmel completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Fine Arts from Macalester College from 1989 to 1993. Kate then pursued further education and completed their M.S. in Art Conservation with a specialization in Textiles Conservation and a sub-specialization in Preventive Conservation from the University of Delaware from 2003 to 2006.
