Van Zyl Botha has extensive work experience in various financial and leadership roles. Van Zyl started their career at FinFive in 2006, where they were a founder, director, and partner, involved in mergers, acquisitions, and regulatory requirements. Van Zyl then joined Randgold & Exploration in 2010 as a Financial Director/CFO/NED, overseeing finance, legal, treasury, IT, and HR services. In 2013, Botha became the CEO of HeroTel, a digital distribution channel, and successfully completed 33 acquisitions in 4 years. Van Zyl also served as the Group Financial Director before returning to the CEO role in 2019. Botha's commitment to providing internet access to underserved communities led him to found and support the Digital Village NGO.
Van Zyl Botha's education history began in 2000 when they enrolled at Stellenbosch University. Van Zyl completed a B.Accounting degree at Stellenbosch University and also pursued Honours and CTA Accounting at UNISA. During this time, their field of study included audit, accounting, taxation, and management accounting.
In 2004, Van Zyl Botha obtained their Chartered Accountant certification from SAICA. Van Zyl also took part in the internationally recognized Board Exams offered by SAICA, focusing on accounting, auditing, tax, and management accounting.
Moving forward to 2010, Van Zyl Botha participated in the JSE Sponsor Development program at Wits Business School, where they studied listing requirements.
Expanding their education in executive management, Van Zyl Botha completed several short courses. In 2020, they attended executive management short courses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, focusing on digital disruption, transformation, and tactics, strategies, and opportunities. Additionally, they studied executive management short courses at London Business School, focusing on rethinking the new normal, organizational resilience, and sustainable change.
In 2021, Van Zyl Botha continued their executive education at Harvard University, concentrating on digital transformation & customers, impact on pricing and business models, the next economy, and machines. Van Zyl also completed executive education short courses at INSEAD, where they studied COVID-19 leadership challenges, global mindset, cultivating creativity, diversity, and culture.
Van Zyl Botha is currently enrolled in the Aspen Global Leadership Network - African Leadership Initiative, developing their leadership skills.
