ABOUT YOUR NEW ROLE

The Intermediate Accountant will support Herschel’s accounting team in providing accurate and timely financial information to our stakeholders by: performing month-end close tasks, reconciling key balance sheet accounts and filing sales and use taxes. This position reports to the Accounting Manager  and works closely with other Finance team members. This position is a 12 month contract, with the potential to turn into a permanent role.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the liability and sales and use tax sections of the financial statements in accordance with both APSE and Herschel’s accounting policies.
    • Preparing monthly accruals and reconciliations for trade accounts payable, accrued liabilities, deferred rent, shareholder and long-term debt;
    • Conducting detailed variance analysis over both the statement of profit and loss and key balance sheet accounts;
    • Filing sales and use tax adhering to reporting/filling deadlines in all tax jurisdictions;
    • Assisting in the operational processes around leased locations and required reporting (straight line rent schedules, validating invoices from landlords based on underlying contractual agreements, sales reporting, percentage rent calculations); and
    • Working closely with the accounts payable team to reconcile the accounts payable subledger to general ledger accounts.
  • Assisting in the interim and year-end audit process by liaising with external auditors
  • Participating in special projects and business initiatives as needed

ABOUT YOU

  • A minimum of 2 years of accounting experience with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Pursuing a CPA designation or equivalent (please note Herschel does not fund CPA's currently)
  • Strong accounting technical skills with knowledge of IFRS and/or ASPE
  • A motivated, self-starter, who enjoys digging into the details, solving problems and seeing things through to the end
  • Strong interpersonal and listening skills, to work with all internal and external individuals in a friendly, professional and competent manner
  • High degree of critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Is extremely organized, with time management and prioritization abilities, who can operate under tight deadlines
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel
  • Experience at a large public practice firm preferable
  • Industry experience, and/or familiarity with an ERP system are considered assets.

The annual salary for this role falls within the range of $60,000 - $75,000 CAD.
