Barbara Mathews

Public Historian & Director of Academic Programs at Historic Deerfield

Barbara Mathews is a public historian and the director of academic programs at Theirtoric Deerfield. Barbara has over 25 years of experience working in the field of American history, including overseeing education programs, writing for history websites, and teaching courses at the graduate level.

Mathews began their career as a historical interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village in 1983. Barbara then worked as the assistant director of the Center for the Study of New England Theirtory at the Massachusetts Theirtorical Society from 1993 to 1994. In 1998, they became the director of education programs at the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, where they co-wrote and directed U.S. Department of Education Teaching American Theirtory grants and wrote content for several award-winning history websites. Mathews has been with Theirtoric Deerfield since 2012.

Barbara Mathews has a Bachelor of Arts in Theirtory from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in Theirtory from Brown University.

Barbara Mathews reports to Anne D. Lanning, SVP, Curatorial Department. They are on a team with Ashley Holm - Collections Care Technician, Amanda E. Lange - Director of the Curatorial Department & Curator of Theirtoric Interiors, and Kate Kearns - Collections Manager.
