Job Summary: Due to growth Honorbridge is recruiting an Organ Donation Coordinator III. The Organ Donation Coordinator III facilitates organ donation in the HonorBridge service area and/or HonorBridge’s Donor Care Unit (DCU). When in the DCU, this position is responsible for managing the entire organ donor process including medical management of the donor in an intensive care setting, provides advanced donor management techniques and acts as the lead coordinator by triaging the needs of the DCU.

  • Serves as a proceduralist to include but not limited to bronchoscopy, arterial and central line placement, node recovery, ultrasound, chest tubes, echocardiograms, and x-rays.
  • Functions as the lead donation coordinator to manage the donor flow through the DCU and operating room
  • Serves in a support role to Organ Donation Coordinators leading the donor management huddle to coordinate donor care
  • Functions as the head of bed coordinator in the operating room providing medical management to the organ donor in the OR during organ recovery.
  • Maintains and operates laboratory equipment. Ensures accurate lab results according to CLIA regulations and lab policies.
  • Maintains and operates pathology lab equipment. Ensures accurate and consistent frozen section samples according to policy.
  • Facilitates Organ Donation
  • Adheres to HonorBridge organ policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Oversees donor management process
    • Initiates donor management orders to achieve hemodynamic stability and optimize organ function, consulting with Medical Director and Organ AOC as needed
    • Evaluates organ suitability by obtaining consults from medical specialties, ordering tests and procedures, and interpreting results
  • Coordinates case dynamics, discusses significant events and issues with the Organ AOC
  • Directs and maximizes organ recovery process
  • Ensures organ recovery is completed in accordance with hospital policy
  • Communicates information specific to recovery process to hospital and transplant staff
  • Performs necessary follow-up specific to the recovery process
  • Performs Critical Bedside Medical Care including:
    • Vasoactive drip titration
    • Able to manage patients requiring hemodynamic monitoring (invasive arterial pressure monitoring, CVP monitoring, fluid resuscitation)
    • Arterial catheter insertion, care, and blood sampling
    • Electrophysiologic monitoring & twelve-lead EKG and EKG interpretation and appropriate intervention.
    • Central venous catheter insertion, site care, pressure monitoring, and blood sampling
    • Ventilator management, providing immediate and continual assessment and intervention to stabilize and manage donors with respiratory insufficiency or failure and able to manage the care of donors requiring airway adjuncts, artificial airways, and conventional mechanical ventilation
    • Artificial airway care, cuff care, suctioning, and oral care
    • Oxygen saturation monitoring by pulse oximetry
    • Able to provide immediate and continual assessment and intervention to stabilize and manage donors with acid-base imbalances, altered renal function, electrolyte imbalances
    • Blood and blood component administration
    • Calculating doses, flow rates, and administration of continuous IV infusions
    • IV insertions, care, blood sampling, and medication administration
    • Initiation of non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring devices and advanced interpretation of hemodynamic trends
  • Serves as a preceptor for Organ Donation Coordinator I and II.
  • Triages organ referrals from the HonorBridge answering service
    • Follows HonorBridge policies and procedures
    • Facilitates open communication between the HonorBridge answering service and hospital staff
    • Initiates action and oversees logistics associated with organ referral process
    • Evaluates potential candidates for organ donation
      • Assesses and analyzes patient history, hospital course, laboratory values, and other pertinent clinical information used to determine suitability for donation
      • Discusses organ suitability with Organ AOC and Medical Director, as needed
  • Fosters open communication with hospital staff, communicates with care team about plan of care, hemodynamic stability, and actions needed to preserve the option of donation
  • Completes documentation completely and accurately
    • Follows HonorBridge policy and procedures
    • Reviews completed electronic donor record for accuracy
  • Maintains electronic medical record (EMR) access to all available hospitals
    • Utilizes medical information from remote or onsite EMR access to obtain and review available medical records
    • Maintains confidentiality of all patient and donor/recipient information
  • Maintains clean, safe and organized workspace
  • Actively assists with the HonorBridge quality assurance process
    • Serves as a technical resource for organ referrals and donors
    • Assists with the e-chart completion process
  • Establishes and maintains ongoing relationships with all levels of hospital personnel and medical staff on a continual basis.
    • Constructs and maintains working relationships with hospital staff and physicians.
    • Works with Hospital Development Specialists to educate hospital staff about organ donation.
  • Responds to and completes administrative duties, to include internal and external communication, projects and QA tasks in a timely manner as defined by HonorBridge leadership.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Administrator on Call (AOC) and HonorBridge leadership
  • Must be prepared to arrive at the start of their shift to HonorBridge’s DCU in Chapel Hill

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: ACLS, PALS, and BLS certification; ABTC certification (CPTC) required within 1 year of eligibility. RN, NP, PA or other relevant healthcare license preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, occasional lifting, finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and visual acuity.

Lifting and/or carrying < 20 lbs:  Greater than 65% of the time

Lifting and/or carrying < 50 lbs:   Less than 35% of the time

Lifting and/or carrying < 100 lbs:  Less than 35% of the time

Work Environment: Normal office environment, normal hospital environment, operating room environment, extensive on-call responsibilities, extensive automobile travel automobile travel within DSA..

Must be prepared to be onsite at one of the “A” hospitals in their assigned region within one hour from notification at all times when availability for clinical activity is required

  • For those assigned to the HonorBridge Winston Salem office this includes Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, or Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
  • For those assigned to the HonorBridge Durham office this includes Duke University Hospital, UNC Medical Center, Rex Healthcare, or WakeMed Raleigh Campus
  • For those assigned to the HonorBridge Greenville office this includes ECU Health Medical Center, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, or Cape Fear Valley Health System.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare and RN, PA or other relevant healthcare license required. Candidates with an associate degree in a healthcare related program or nursing diploma may be considered but must be enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s degree program within three years of employment and obtain a bachelor’s degree with a major in a healthcare related program within five years of employment.
  • A minimum of 3 years OPO experience OR Patient care epxerience in a critical care envioronment or combination of OPO experience and patient care experience in a critical care environment. **Prior equivalent OPO medical/clinical experience can be considered in lieu of license requirement, but not in lieu of bachelor’s degree requirement.
