The Horsemen company name was influenced in part by a nickname coined many years ago by Grantland Rice, a sportswriter for the New York Herald-Tribune, when he referenced the Notre Dame football team's dominating backfield of Stuhldreher, Crowley, Miller and Layden. The lineup was put in place by coach Knute Rockne in 1922, when in 1924, Rice penned the famous passage that began "Outlined against a blue, gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again."​
