Writing Teacher at Hugo House

Sonya Lea is a versatile writer, screenwriter, memoirist, and essayist with extensive experience in various literary and creative roles. Since June 2001, Sonya has worked as a writer, achieving recognition as a Nicholl Fellowship finalist among three screenwriting awards. In addition to mentoring writers, artists, and entrepreneurs, Sonya teaches popular memoir and personal narrative classes at Hugo House. Notable works include the memoir "Wondering Who You Are" published by Tin House in 2015 and the award-winning short film "Every Beautiful Thing." As the Director of Writing Programs for Women Veterans with the Red Badge Project, Sonya developed programs to aid healing through storytelling. Furthermore, Sonya brings a background in public affairs from the Memphis Pink Palace Museum and entrepreneurial experience from creating Wild Work, a business planning initiative designed for creative individuals. Academic credentials include degrees in English Literature and advanced writing training from prestigious institutions.
