Malte Lücken

HCA Integration Team Lead at Human Cell Atlas

Malte Lücken is currently working at Helmholtz Munich as a Principal Investigator, leading the computational cellular health group. Their work focuses on building population-level single-cell reference atlases and deriving patient-level insights for clinical applications in various organs and tissues. Prior to this role, Malte was a member of the HCA integration team at Human Cell Atlas. They also served as a core team member for Open Problems in Single-Cell Analysis. Before joining Helmholtz Munich, Malte worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at HelmholtzZentrum München, where they developed tools for single-cell RNA-seq data analysis and collaborated in research projects related to lung biology, neuroscience, diabetes, and breast cancer. They previously worked as a Computational Biologist at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at UCB, where they focused on functional interpretation of gene expression data and worked on single-cell RNA-seq data analysis. Malte's academic background includes being a DPhil Student at the University of Oxford, where they worked on applying network analysis to the study of complex diseases in collaboration with UCB Pharma.

Malte Lücken pursued a DPhil in Systems Approaches to Biomedical Sciences, specializing in bioinformatics, from 2012 to 2016 at the University of Oxford. Earlier, they earned a BSc MPhys in Physics from the University of Warwick between 2007 and 2012. Additionally, they completed a short-term exchange program, known as AIKOM, at The University of Tokyo in 2010 and 2011.
