Jo Ann Barefoot has a long and successful career in the financial services industry. Jo Ann began their career in 1976 as a Staff Member for the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs. In 1978, they became Deputy Comptroller of the Currency, where they established the OCC's original consumer protection unit. In 1982, they founded and built Barefoot Marrinan & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm providing bank regulatory advice on consumer financial protection. In 1996, they became Managing Director at KPMG, leading several nationwide regulatory risk management practice areas. In 2000, they founded the Jo Ann Barefoot Group, LLC, a consulting firm for financial companies in consumer protection and other regulatory matters. In 2011, they became Co-Chair of Treliant Risk Advisors, providing strategy and regulatory risk management consulting for financial services companies. In 2012, they founded the Barefoot Innovation Group and became the host of the podcast show Barefoot Innovation. In 2015, they became a Senior Fellow at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. In 2019, they became CEO and Cofounder of the Alliance for Innovative Regulation.

Jo Ann Barefoot's education history includes a Bachelor of Arts in English from Ohio Wesleyan University, which they obtained between 1967 and 1969. Jo Ann then attended the University of Michigan, where they received a B.A. in English in 1970. Finally, they attended The George Washington University between 1974 and 1978, studying Economics.
