Charlene Akoto

Senior Development Scientist at hVIVO

Charlene Akoto has a strong background in research, with experience in various scientific roles. Charlene is currently working as a Development Scientist at hVIVO since 2021. Prior to this, they worked as a Research Scientist in Reproductive and HIV Immunology at the University of Oxford from January 2019 to August 2020. During their time at Oxford, they focused on investigating innate immune cells in adverse pregnancy outcomes during maternal HIV infection. Charlene also contributed to manuscript writing and publication of three manuscripts. Charlene'stechnical skills include containment level 3, multiplex ELISA, and flow cytometry.

Before joining the University of Oxford, Charlene worked as a Research Scientist at the University of Southampton from December 2017 to June 2018. In this role, they were involved in planning and executing cell-based experiments related to human rhinovirus infection of mast cells and investigating the expression of an asthma susceptibility gene in clinical biopsies. Charlene also studied the dynamics of human rhinovirus protease activity.

Charlene's earlier experience includes working as a Research Assistant at UCL from January 2012 to September 2013. In this role, they provided support to the research group by maintaining and genotyping colonies, culturing embryonic stem cells and hybridoma cells, and purifying and quantifying antibodies. Charlene also performed various laboratory techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA and RNA extraction, Western blotting, and mycoplasma screening.

Overall, Charlene Akoto has a diverse range of research experience in the field of immunology and molecular biology, with expertise in techniques such as flow cytometry, ELISA, and cell culture.

Charlene Akoto's education history begins in 2007 when they enrolled at the University of Bristol. Charlene pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and completed their studies in 2010. After that, they attended the University of Nottingham from 2010 to 2011, where they obtained a Master of Science degree in Molecular Medical Microbiology. Following their master's, Charlene continued their academic journey at the University of Southampton from 2013 to 2017. There, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), specializing in Integrated MPhil/PhD Biomedical Science with a focus on Immunity and Infection. In 2020, Charlene also obtained a certification called "The NHS Explained" from The King's Fund, although the specific month of completion is not provided.
