Hy Safran (He/Him)

Hy Safran is a dedicated leader, philanthropist, and community advocate who has made a significant impact on the Jewish community in Greater Detroit. Since joining the Jewish Federation and United Jewish Foundation in 2015, Hy has served as the Director of Philanthropy, where he has been instrumental in nurturing relationships and fostering philanthropic initiatives that support the long-term growth and vitality of the community. In this role, Hy focuses not just on immediate contributions but on building lasting legacies that resonate across generations. His work in developing the Federation’s annual campaign and endowment has encouraged countless families to embrace philanthropy, ensuring that their generosity continues to benefit the community for years to come.

Hy’s career is marked by a strong foundation in national leadership, having held prominent roles before his tenure at the Federation. He served as the national constituency director for President Barack Obama, where he honed his strategic thinking and leadership skills, managing relationships with key stakeholders across the country. Later, as the chief director of strategic affairs in the U.S. Senate, Hy continued to demonstrate his ability to lead and influence at the highest levels of government. These experiences provided him with a unique perspective and a deep understanding of the complexities of leadership, which he has brought to his work in the nonprofit sector.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Hy is deeply committed to community engagement and service. He is actively involved in a number of influential organizations, serving on the boards of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and Humble Design. His dedication to community service is further reflected in his contributions as a trustee or board member for various institutions, including the Jewish Community Relations Council, Jewish Theological Seminary Detroit Chapter, Jewish Federation NEXTGen Executive Committee, Oakland County Community Health Coalition, Anti-Defamation League Young Adult Division, and JARC Young Leadership Division, among others. Through these roles, Hy has worked tirelessly to advocate for the needs of the community and to foster a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Hy’s academic achievements are a testament to his commitment to excellence in all areas of his life. He graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University, where he was recognized for his outstanding academic performance and intellectual curiosity. He also earned a degree magna cum laude from the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he deepened his understanding of Jewish history, culture, and values.
