Janel Carothers

Janel Carothers has over 13 years of experience in business and economic development. Janel is currently a Salesperson at Southeast Commercial Real Estate and will start as a Senior Vice President at Hy Stor Energy in September 2022. Previously, Carothers served as the Chief Development Officer for the Hancock County Port & Harbor Commission from September 2014 to September 2022, where they managed the real estate portfolio, led the overall strategic economic development plan, and had revenue responsibility. Prior to that, they were the Director of Industrial Development for the Harrison County Development Commission from July 2009 to September 2014. Carothers's responsibilities in this role included managing industry recruitment and expansion activities, coordinating with key local and state partners, and overseeing industrial site development, existing industry expansion, training and workforce development, and marketing and recruitment outreach. Janel began their career as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi in August 2008.

Janel Carothers obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Affairs from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2008. In 2007, they received a Certificate of French Studies from Polytech Orléans. Janel later pursued a Master of Science degree in Economic Development from The University of Southern Mississippi, graduating in 2009. Janel has also received several additional certifications, including the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) from the International Economic Development Council and a Mississippi Real Estate Salesperson license. Janel also holds a National Career Readiness Certificate Platinum from ACT and completed the Certified Port Executive Program from Macdonnell Group.
