Sean Monkman PhD P.Eng has an extensive work experience in the field of concrete sustainability and technology development. Sean is currently the Vice President of Concrete Sustainability at ICON, a position they have held since 2023. Prior to this, they worked at CarbonCure Technologies for over a decade, where they held several progressively senior roles. From 2019 to 2023, they served as the Senior Vice President of Technology Development. Prior to that, they were the Vice President of Technology Development from 2011 to 2019, and the Technical Director from 2008 to 2011.
Before joining CarbonCure Technologies, Sean worked as a researcher at Masons Mortars in 2004, where they focused on the repair and conservation of historic structures. At this company, they initiated a research program to characterize the company's line of mortars and improved the repair material color matching service.
Prior to that, they worked as a researcher at Heriot-Watt University from 2003 to 2004, where they were involved in a European Union funded research project on the design and function of novel polymeric admixtures for durable high-performance concrete. During this time, they supervised by Professor Phil Banfill and focused on testing the properties of fresh concrete and paste.
Sean's earlier research experience includes working at the University of Toronto from 2000 to 2002, where they conducted research on test methods used to predict susceptibility to Delayed Ettringite Formation, under the supervision of Professor R.D.

Sean Monkman, PhD P.Eng, has an extensive education history in engineering. Sean obtained their Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from Queen's University from 1991 to 1995. Following this, they pursued their Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, completing it in 1999. During the same period, they also undertook a second Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, concluding in 1999. Lastly, Sean Monkman went on to complete their PhD in Civil Engineering from McGill University, spanning from 2004 to 2009.
