George Bier

George Bier has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. George is currently serving as the Director of Enterprise Solution Architecture at illumifin, where they lead the solution architecture team and is involved in updating and maintaining legacy applications and platforms. George also identifies opportunities for migration and integration to new technologies such as Cloud (Azure), Docker, Snowflake, OAuth, and API design.

Prior to their current role, George worked at Optum for many years, holding various positions including VP of Engineering and Architecture, Senior Director of Engineering and Architecture, and Director of Technology Engineering. During their time at Optum, they focused on enterprise architecture and played a key role in developing authentication, authorization, and identity matching solutions. George also served as the product owner for the Optum Care Suite Architecture Team, overseeing capacity planning, setting priorities, and managing the technical direction.

Before Optum, George worked at SoftBrands - Fourth Shift as the Director of Systems Technology. There, they played an instrumental role in setting and implementing the long-term future directions for the Fourth Shift product. George also managed projects, provided resource planning, and made significant code contributions for various teams.

Earlier in their career, George worked at Convex Supercomputer Corp as a Technical Lead and UNIX Kernel Development Engineer. In this role, they guided a team responsible for implementing the UNIX server component of a distributed operating system.

George Bier completed their education with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from Columbia Engineering in 1983. George was also enrolled in a doctoral program (ABD - all but dissertation) in computer science at the same university. In addition to their academic qualifications, George has obtained certifications from Microsoft, including "Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals" and "Microsoft Certified: Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals" in 2022.
