David Berkman

David has over 20 years of experience building teams and architecting highly distributed web-scale platforms for industries as diverse as mobile gaming and supply chain management.

As VP of Engineering at Active Index Advisors (AIA), he helped design the algorithm and create the platform that allowed the company to use software heuristics to rebalance customized index-tracking portfolios, taking advantage of loss-harvesting opportunities, in order to beat their indexes on an after-tax basis. The use of software brought the kind of scale that allows for the democratization of these benefits, creating one of the first ‘robo-advisors’. Active Index Advisors was co-founded by Burton Malkiel and was subsequently acquired by Natixis Global Asset Management.

David has hired & managed teams and instituted agile development practices with a track record of meeting and exceeding business goals. He has expertise in relational and non-relational database systems, service-oriented architectures, enterprise messaging, open-source technologies, and creating systems that span multiple OS and programming languages.
