Nimali Withana has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of clinical science and research. Nimali began their career as a Research Associate at ViaLactia Biosciences, where they conducted various gene cloning and sequencing projects. Nimali then worked as a Research Assistant at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, focusing on evaluating DNA damage and repair responses in cell lines to predict patient sensitivity to radiotherapy. During this time, they also pursued their Ph.D., studying the functional role of a protein in regulating breast cancer progression and bone metastasis.
After completing their Ph.D., Nimali joined Stanford University as a Postdoctoral Scholar, where they investigated the application of activity-based imaging probes as potential diagnostic tools in breast cancer and lung fibrosis. Their research involved non-invasive imaging techniques to visualize target gene activity and evaluate the efficacy of inhibitors.
Nimali then transitioned to the pharmaceutical industry, joining Genentech/Roche as a Clinical Scientist. In this role, they led clinical trials and studies on cancer immunotherapy in breast cancer and hematologic malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Nimali also played a key role in the development of several novel therapies and contributed to the filing of applications for regulatory approval.
Following their tenure at Genentech/Roche, Nimali continued their career at Roche as a Country Medical Manager, overseeing the Breast Cancer and Cancer Immunotherapy portfolios. Their responsibilities included addressing the medical and scientific needs of clinical practice, engaging with key stakeholders, and ensuring alignment between medical strategy and overall brand and business strategy. Nimali also led cross-functional collaborations and played a pivotal role in successful submissions and funding applications for clinical trials.
Currently, Nimali is working as the Senior Director of Clinical Science at Imugene Limited, where they are leveraging their expertise to contribute to the development of clinical science initiatives.
Throughout their career, Nimali has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient outcomes in the field of oncology. Their contributions have been recognized through various achievements, including presenting data from clinical trials at international conferences and contributing to the development of novel therapies.
Nimali Withana completed their Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biology/Biological Sciences at The University of Auckland from 1997 to 1999. Nimali then pursued their Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Immunology and Molecular Medicine, also at The University of Auckland, from 2000 to 2002. Nimali furthered their education by undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre from 2007 to 2012.
