Lorenzo Riano

Lead Software Engineer at Industrial Next

Lorenzo Riano has an extensive work experience in the field of robotics and computer vision. Lorenzo is currently working as a Lead Software Engineer at Industrial Next, starting from May 2023. Prior to that, from July 2019 to January 2023, they worked at Waymo as a Sr Software Engineer, specializing in long range perception, deep learning, sensor fusion, and perception pipelines.

Before joining Waymo, Lorenzo worked at Anki as a Sr Robotic Vision Engineer from August 2017 to May 2019. In this role, they focused on developing deep neural networks for embedded devices and programming robotic behaviors.

From January 2014 to August 2017, Lorenzo worked at Bosch North America as a Senior Research Scientist. Lorenzo worked on various projects involving computer vision, 3D data, deep learning, and industrial manipulation. Lorenzo'swork included object detection, pose estimation, learning from demonstration, semantic point interpretation, and automatic floor plan generation.

Prior to that, Lorenzo worked as a Scientist at Honda Research Institute USA, Inc. for a year from March 2013 to January 2014.

Lorenzo's work experience also includes a role as a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley from April 2012 to January 2014. During this time, they worked on projects related to vision-haptics sensor fusion, integrated symbolic-continuous planning, machine learning, and developing systems that integrate vision, natural language, perception, and planning on robots.

Before joining UC Berkeley, Lorenzo worked as a Research Associate at the University of Ulster from September 2008 to April 2012. Here, they worked on autonomously learning skills in robotics, developing tele-presence systems, and managing the technical aspects of the robotics laboratory.

Overall, Lorenzo Riano has a diverse range of experiences and expertise in the field of robotics, computer vision, machine learning, and perception.

Lorenzo Riano obtained their MSc in Computer Science from Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II between 1999 and 2004. Following that, they pursued their PhD in Robotics at Università degli Studi di Palermo from 2005 to 2008. In May 2018, they acquired a certification in Deep Learning Specialization from deeplearning.ai.
