Karl Sylvester

Dr. Karl Sylvester is a surgeon-scientist, innovator, and entrepreneur. He is a globally recognized expert in maternal and child health discovery and translation. As an innovator, Karl has both started and advised numerous companies in product development and innovation across the spectrum of life sciences covering medical technology, therapeutics, and diagnostics. He has led multi-disciplinary teams in both academia and industry for the development of technology platforms for translational application. Dr. Sylvester is a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Stanford Children's Hospital and the Associate Dean of Maternal and Child Health Research at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Sylvester has a distinguished career in clinical care for newborns with a spectrum of congenital anomalies and is a recognized expert in newborn gut biology. He is also an experienced clinical trialist serving as a leading member of the first team to successfully execute a prospective randomized NIH-sponsored clinical trial for the surgical treatment of Necrotizing Enterocolitis in critically ill, very low birth weight newborns. Dr. Sylvester has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications and holds numerous patents for his novel discoveries.
