Regional Director, Europe

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking a Regional Director for a contracted consultant role based in Europe. 

IEEFA is a rapidly-growing NGO/non-profit think tank that conducts research and analysis on financial and economic issues related to energy finance markets, trends and policies. Headquartered in the United States, IEEFA has a global team of analysts and communications personnel, including significant presence in the greater Asia Pacific region and a growing Europe-based team and network of partners. The Europe team works collaboratively with IEEFA colleagues and other organizations both internationally and in the region.

IEEFA produces a significant volume of original research, as well as ongoing analysis and reports on issues affecting energy, and finance industries. Our major research reports, daily commentaries, press coverage, and other resources can be found on our website: www.ieefa.org.

The organization’s research products and commentary are used by a variety of organizations and individuals involved in the energy and finance industry, including investors, just-transition organizations, environmental organizations, business and labor leaders, market analysts, academic researchers and educators, legislators, attorneys and government administrators. IEEFA’s work is widely cited across the mainstream press and in trade publications.

Role and Responsibilities

The Regional Director, Europe, will serve in a leadership role on IEEFA’s Europe team, working alongside regional and global research and communications professionals to ensure that IEEFA meets its strategic goals. The Europe team is one of five regional teams at IEEFA (including Asia, Australia, North America, and South Asia), all of whom are supported by a centralized administrations staff based in the U.S. The regional leaders all serve on IEEFA’s Global Management Team.

The Europe director manages regional operational functions across research, outreach and communications, with an inclusive, supportive approach that identifies opportunities for continuous improvement.  The Europe team currently consists of five research analysts and two communications professionals. 

Leadership

  • Provide leadership, direction and advice in the development of the research and communications program, operational and financial plans.
  • Gain continuous knowledge about energy finance issues and industry, government and investor trends affecting this area.
  • Maintain a future-focused mindset, with the ability to analyze initiatives and programs and learn from experience, while adapting to new conditions quickly.
  • Demonstrate expertise and conviction to energize, inspire and influence others.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with professionals from partner organizations in the region to maximize coordination and impact.
  • Participate in monthly calls and annual meetings of the global management team, as well as occasional IEEFA board meetings when required.
  • Co-lead global initiatives with other regional directors when appropriate

Fundraising and Grant Management

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with key funders of IEEFA’s work in the region, working in close collaboration IEEFA’s Director of Development, CEO, and relevant regional personnel.
  • In collaboration with IEEFA’s Development team and CEO, monitor the funder landscape and continually explore new funding opportunities, participating where appropriate in direct engagement with funders.
  • Ensure deliverables are accounted for in Europe’s work programs.
  • Work with the Development team to ensure timely completion and submission of funder reports and proposals.

Research

  • Overall responsibility for developing and ensuring the research program is strategically aligned to IEEFA’s mission.
  • Ensure there is a coherent and collaborative approach to research and knowledge sharing across the IEEFA team, both within and outside Europe
  • Support the work of the analysts in the region to optimize their expertise and leverage their skills.

Outreach and Communications

  • Overall responsibility for overseeing the communications strategy, the work of IEEFA’s Europe communications team, and the measurement of outreach and communications impact.
  • Ensure coordination with IEEFA's other regional communications team leaders.
  • Provide input and make recommendations for delivery of IEEFA’s content and the development of new communications tools such as websites, databases, and digital strategies.

Human Resources

  • Manage team recruitment in collaboration with the Human Resources Division including onboarding, offboarding, monitoring of contracts and funder deliverables.
  • Hire, develop and supervise regional staff as needed.
  • Provide a challenging and goal-oriented environment while working with staff to develop and grow their skills and expertise. Actively seek out opportunities for individual and team development.

Finance

  • Work with the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Executive Officer to ensure consultant contracts reflect agreed funding commitments and are resourced accordingly.
  • Work with the Chief Financial Officer to set annual budgets, review budget reports and manage spending in the region.

IT and Support

  • Work with the IEEFA IT Manager to support implementation of global initiatives designed to improve collaboration through improved engagement, IT and streamlining of systems and processes.
  • Ensure all Europe personnel complete IEEFA cybersecurity training and follow required cybersecurity measures and practices.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of the IT tools used by IEEFA, including Box, Google Workspace suite, and Zoom.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree
  • Demonstrated commitment to IEEFA’s mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable and profitable energy economy.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a management role.
  • Experience with exercising strategic judgement, flexibility and problem-solving skills within short time frames and in matters where there is little to no precedent.
  • Knowledge or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of financial and energy issues related to the fossil-fuel and renewable-energy industries as well as knowledge of how marginalized communities are affected by fossil fuels and climate change.
  • A high level of emotional intelligence with the ability to inspire and influence others.
  • Excellent mediation, negotiation and interpersonal skills for handling and resolving complex issues.
  • Knowledge of requirements, practices, and procedures for developing grant proposals and budgets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience representing a mission-driven organization in public forums.
  • Experience working alongside a global team and a track record of creating inclusive work cultures.
  • Experience with campaign strategy development and implementation.
  • Business fluency in one or more European languages, in addition to English

Term and Schedule: The initial full-time contract will be 5 days per week for 12 months. Our intention is that the contract be renewed annually by mutual agreement, depending on funding

Benefits: No benefits apply as this is a contracted consultant role.

Compensation: Fee is negotiable within a range of $175,000-$205,000 USD or local equivalent.

Work Location & Travel: This is a remote position for candidates located in Europe. Some travel may be required to attend in-person events and meetings.
