Tanja Petersen

Applied Research Specialist & Project Leader Geomagnetism Project at GNS Science

Tanja has developed her research background in Geophysics into a specialized interest in monitoring variations of the Earth's magnetic field. She is leading the Geomagnetism project, which is built around the operations of New Zealand's Geomagnetic Observatories that are part of the global INTERMAGNET network and contribute to New Zealand’s National Significant Database (NSDC). Tanja is currently collaborating with Antarctica NZ on relocating the observatory at Scott Base. She is also leading two projects that are part of the Solar Tsunamis Endeavour programme, an international collaboration led by the University of Otago to understand how New Zealand's energy infrastructure will be impacted by an extreme Space Weather event.
