David “Mac” McWhorter serves as Executive Director of the Institute for Real Estate Operating Companies (iREOC), a division of Institutional Real Estate, Inc. (IREI). In this capacity, McWhorter guides the Institute in advancing its mission in collaboration with IREI senior executives, the iREOC Board of Governors and supporting sponsors of the Institute.
McWhorter has nearly 30 years of experience in the institutional real estate investment industry and has raised over $11 billion for investment management firms serving institutional investors worldwide. In these capacities, he was responsible for managing more than 200 institutional investor relationships representing over $1 trillion in total assets to meet their investment product, information and communication needs.
Prior to joining the iREOC in 2016, McWhorter served as Managing Partner and Head of Investor Relations at Carmel Partners for just over two years. In this capacity, he also served on the firm’s Investment Committee. During his short time with the firm, McWhorter led the capital raise of the firm’s Fund V that closed at over $1 billion and was recognized by PERE as runner up for North America capital raise of the year in 2014.
Prior to that, McWhorter served as a Director of Investor Relations at AEW Capital Management for more than 10 years. In this capacity, he was responsible for all capital raising and investor relations in the western U.S., and served as the firm’s public pension specialist for the entire U.S. Prior to AEW, McWhorter served as Global Director of Property Business Development at Henderson Global Investors and Managing Director at Heitman Investment Management.
Prior to that, McWhorter was a developer/owner/operator in the retail property sector. He began his real estate career in 1979 at 20 years old as a retail brokerage specialist at CBRE Commercial Real Estate.
McWhorter’s professional memberships have included; Pension Real Estate Association (PREA), State/CA Association of County Retirement Systems (SACRS), Texas Association of Public Employee Retirement Systems (TEXPERS) and the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE). He has also served on the Boards of the Association of Investment Management Sales Executives (AIMSE) and the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate, and served for over 20 years on the Editorial Board of the Institutional Real Estate Americas publication prior to joining the iREOC.
