Emily Johnston

Emily Johnston is a seasoned medical professional and outdoor expert with extensive experience in emergency medicine and wilderness training. As the Founder of Cascadia Mountain Institute since February 2022, Emily has developed specialized curricula in tactical and austere medicine for military teams. Emily also serves as an Emergency Medicine Physician at Madigan Army Medical Center, a role that commenced in October 2020, and has held similar positions at St. John's Health and Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. Additionally, Emily operates as an Instructor for DiMM and Military Mountain Medicine and serves as a Mountain Guide with International Mountain Guides since 2011, leading expeditions to some of the world's highest peaks. Emily's career in outdoor guidance began in 1986 with Orion River Rafting, where training and guiding whitewater enthusiasts around the globe has been a key focus. Emily holds an MD from the University of Washington and completed an Emergency Medicine Residency at Oregon Health & Science University, supplemented by a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Middlebury College.
