Fred Werner

Head, Strategic Engagement at International Telecommunication Union

Fred Werner has a diverse work experience spanning over several companies and roles. Fred started their career as an IT Support at Merck Sharp & Dohme in 1996, followed by working as an Account Manager at Casala Transport Moving Company in 1996-1997. Fred then joined EOTC - European Organisation for Conformity Assessment as the Head of Marketing & Communications from 1997 to 2003. During their time at EOTC, they played a key role in launching training and consulting services, developing marketing materials, and launching news services and web portals.

In 2003, Fred Werner joined ETIS - The Community of Telecom Professionals as the Communications & Programme Director. In this role, they had various responsibilities including programme development, marketing and communications, events organization, member recruitment and retention, and strategic alliances formation. Fred successfully revitalized events and working groups, implemented a communication strategy and membership management platform, and boosted international recognition and membership by 35%.

Fred Werner then worked at AI for Good from 2017 onwards, where they served as the Executive Producer and later as the Chief of Strategy and Operations. AI for Good is a United Nations platform that aims to apply AI for the advancement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In these roles, they were responsible for practical applications of AI, global impact scaling, and partnerships with UN Sister Agencies and Switzerland.

Lastly, Fred Werner currently works at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as the Head of Strategic Engagement for the Standardization Bureau. Their responsibilities include community engagement functions such as marketing and communications, membership recruitment, business development, and positioning ITU-T as an innovative organization.

Fred Werner has a diverse education history. Fred earned a degree in MIT CSAIL Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy from MIT Sloan School of Management in 2021. In 2007, they completed an Executive Technical MBA focused on Managing Telecoms Technology at Informa Telecoms & Tech Academy in Dubai. Prior to that, Fred obtained an MBA in International Business from UBI Business School between 2000 and 2002. Fred began their academic journey at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where they earned a BA in Business & Human Resources Management from 1991 to 1995. Fred also holds a High School Diploma from The American International School in Salzburg, obtained between 1988 and 1991. Although information is not available regarding specific degrees, they have also attended Istanbul International Community School, International School Manila, and Pownall Hall School in Wilmslow, United Kingdom.
