Ben Bussey

Chief Scientist at Intuitive Machines

Ben Bussey has accumulated extensive work experience in the field of space exploration and research. Ben started their career as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in 1995 and later worked as a Research Fellow at the European Space Agency from 1997 to 1999. In 2000, they joined Northwestern University as a Postdoctoral Researcher before moving to the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2001 for the same role.

In 2002, Bussey joined The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) as the Principal Professional Staff, where they played a key role in leading research teams and contributing to NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate. Ben'swork at APL included being the APL lead for the Lunar Surface Innovation Initiative and leading NASA funded NLSI and SSERVI lunar teams.

In 2014, Bussey joined NASA and served various roles within the organization. Ben was the Chief Exploration Scientist for the Exploration since Strategy and Integration Office (ESSIO) in NASA's Science Mission Directorate. Additionally, they held the position of Acting Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration in 2020. These roles involved managing the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.

Most recently, in 2022, Bussey became the Chief Scientist at Intuitive Machines, where they continue to contribute their expertise in the field of space exploration.Overall, Ben Bussey has had a diverse and accomplished career in space research and exploration, with significant contributions to NASA and other esteemed organizations.

Ben Bussey obtained a Ph.D in Planetary Geology from UCL, which they pursued from 1991 to 1995. Prior to that, from 1988 to 1991, they completed their undergraduate studies at the University of Oxford, where they earned a BA in Physics. Ben'seducation journey began at Newquay Tretherras, where they spent the period from 1981 to 1988. Although the specific degree and field of study from Newquay Tretherras are unknown, it is clear that this was their educational foundation.
